How this resource helps
The Lantern Helpers: Recount and Find a Lesson gives Grade 2 learners a focused route from explicit modeling to supported practice and independent application. A topic is a short label, such as helping. A lesson is an idea a reader can use, such as asking for help can solve a problem. Retell the main events before naming the lesson. This original realistic story gives focused practice; it is not a folktale or a complete study of the standard’s range of cultures and genres.

Standard or objective
RL.2.2
Recount an original story and connect its central lesson to key events.
Learner directions
Read the lesson and supplied text or reference. Attempt each task before viewing the key. Explain when asked. Use separate paper for full drafts or longer answers; the PDF is not a fillable form.
Teaching suggestions
Model the two examples; use tasks 1–4 as a readiness check. Assign four tasks per practice block, then use the independent exit responses to select a specific reteaching move. For extended writing, supply separate paper. Keep answer pages separate.
