A Small Event, Fully Told | Grade 3 W.3.3 Narrative Writing

A Small Event, Fully Told teaches Grade 3 W.3.3 narrative craft using the complete published Sizwe’s Smile. This 75-page printable packet includes five daily targets, a selected seven-phase 80-minute writing core, 30 multiple-choice questions and 30 open or writing-process tasks, complete keys, source-faithful teacher analysis, spacious planning/draft/process sheets, rubric and conference record. Learners write their own real or imagined experience, establish situation and narrator or characters, unfold events naturally, develop them with dialogue and descriptions of actions, thoughts and feelings, use temporal links and provide closure. With peer/adult guidance, they revise and edit as needed for task and purpose. No fixed event, sentence, dialogue-line or revision count is imposed. This complete Sizwe mentor also appears in early-grade reading/writing resources, including W.K.5, W.K.6 and several RL.1 packets. The Grade 3 narrative craft and actual writing-process demands differ; buying multiple packets does not provide a different story each time. Familiar-source work does not certify independent reading complexity or unseen transfer.

Required materials: Complete story text included; no outside book purchase. Provide writing tools, appropriate access and genuine peer/adult guidance. No device required. No prerecorded audio, editable slides, video or story illustrations bundled; attribution-only Book Dash logo is included.

Five targets guide multi-session work, not a guaranteed mastery deadline. Actual learner-composed written narrative, planning and supported revision/editing decisions are required. MC choices, copied mentor words, teacher-authored models, oral rehearsal or a completed template do not establish full writing performance. Document access separately from supplied content; permitted scribing or assistive input must preserve learner meaning. N/O marks unavailable/unobserved evidence, not an observed incomplete attempt. Meaningful retention after checking is valid; do not fabricate errors. No forced smiling, emotional disclosure or claim that smiles cure distress or cause weather. Children are not responsible for others’ feelings. No street crossing, rain outing, dog handling or reenactment required. Source interpretation preserves the cousin’s letter, delayed officer response and unknown reason for Sizwe’s depleted smile; no omitted-art facts. Sizwe’s Smile by Vianne Venter (writer), Genevieve Terblanche (illustrator), Lauren Rycroft (designer). Book Dash, Cape Town, June 2014; exact English HTML edition, ISBN 978-0-9922358-4-0.
