How this resource helps
Build interpretations students can support with evidence. Two original core readings anchor the work: “The Empty Square,” a literary story about a neighborhood mural, and “When a Vote Is Only a Starting Point,” an explanatory case study using explicitly invented survey data. A fresh literary passage, “The Spare Key,” supports independent transfer assessment. The paid ZIP contains three printable PDFs: a 40-page student packet, 14-page teacher guide and key, and 54-page state-reference appendix (108 pages total). Practice includes evidence selection, reasoning, quotation and paraphrase, objective summaries, text connections, literary craft, claims evaluation, and theme/central-idea extensions. Suggested pacing is six sessions, adaptable to your learners. Supported practice and independent assessment are identified separately. Standards scope: official-source research covers the 50 states and District of Columbia against a 2026–27 baseline, checked October 14, 2026. The appendix addresses selected evidence/inference components. Related or partial correlations, grade-band and overarching standards, local-adoption requirements and transition options are identified. Alabama and Nebraska include partial correlations. Maryland’s implementation applicability remains unresolved and appears as a research note only. This is not a complete curriculum, a full-standard coverage guarantee, a state-endorsed product, or universal locally adopted alignment. No Lexile measurement is claimed. Download the complete eight-page free “The Label” sample with its matching answer key in the Sample pages section. The PDF contains a Saint Pierre cover, five original student-sample pages including the license, and a separate two-page teaching-notes/key section. Individual full-page images are also provided below. Select a page to enlarge it. The free sample uses a separate original passage and does not disclose paid practice or assessment answers. Print PDF pages 2-6 for students; keep pages 7-8 separate until students have responded. The sample key applies only to tasks S1-S3.

Standard or objective
Analyze explicit and implied meaning, test inferences, select relevant textual evidence, and explain reasoning. The appendix provides selected state-standard references and task correlations for a 2026–27 research baseline, with partial, grade-band, local-adoption and transition limitations. Maryland applicability is unresolved and is not claimed. This is supplemental practice, not complete-standard or universal state alignment.
