Listen before you answer
Adults
- Purpose
- Connect attentive listening with a specific, thoughtful response.
- What you need
- A notebook and a Bible if you want to read the passage in your preferred edition.
A passage to consider
James encourages the community to listen readily and to be deliberate about speaking and anger. The passage asks readers to consider whether their responses serve the life of faith they want to practice. It offers a starting point for examining the space between hearing something and answering it.
James 1:19–20. This is an original summary, not a quotation or Bible translation.
Try it
- Read the summary, and optionally read James 1:19–20 in your own Bible.
- Consider a low-stakes situation, such as a disagreement about a shared task. Use a fictional example if you prefer.
- Write one question that would help you understand the other person before responding.
- Draft a calm response that states your view and leaves room for theirs.
Think and discuss
- What is the difference between waiting to speak and listening to understand?
- Which word or idea in the passage challenges your first reaction?
- What small listening habit could you practice this week?

Personal and group reflection guidance
For a group, allow time for quiet reflection and let participants pass. Discuss ideas without requiring personal disclosures. Listening does not require agreeing, tolerating harm or abandoning boundaries.
